Reflecting on Our Sustainability Education Program

We are proud to reflect on the growth, impact, and engagement we’ve seen from  Grimes Middle School 6th grade students who participated in our Sustainability Education Program. What began as a mission to introduce sustainability concepts has grown into a hands-on, student-centered experience that empowered young people to think critically about their role in protecting the environment.

Bringing Sustainability to Life

One of the most impactful moments of the program was our Cafeteria Composting  Day. This event transformed an everyday space into an opportunity for real-world learning. Students actively participated in sorting food waste, learning what can and cannot be composted, and seeing firsthand how small actions can reduce environmental harm. It was more than a lesson, it was a shift in mindset. Our partnership with Plant Chicago further deepened this learning. Through their expertise in environmental education, students were able to connect classroom concepts to real-world systems. 

In addition, our partnership with Pullman Tech Workshop helped bring composting efforts from school to home. Composting bins were built by their workforce development participants and given out to students that participated in our Sustainability Education Program. Built from recyclable materials,  these bins gave students the tools to continue composting beyond a single event, turning knowledge into daily practice and reinforcing sustainability as a habit rather than a one-time activity.

Measuring Impact Through Student Voice

Survey results from the program highlighted meaningful progress. Students reported a stronger understanding of sustainability concepts, increased awareness of food waste, and a greater sense of responsibility toward the environment. Many shared that they now feel more confident taking action in their own homes and communities, whether that means composting, reducing waste, or encouraging others to do the same.

A Foundation for the Future

At Building Bridges, Inc., we believe education is the key to lasting change. This program was not just about teaching sustainability, it was about building a mindset. By combining hands-on experiences and education, community partnerships, and real-world exposure, we’ve helped Grimes Middle School students see themselves as active participants in creating a more sustainable future; however,the impact does not end here. The knowledge, habits, and confidence students have gained will continue to grow, ripple outward, and shape the communities they are part of.
