Beyond the Classroom. More Than STEM. Planting Seeds. Building Futures.

What if one STEM experiment could spark a lifelong interest in science? What if one conversation with a mentor could help a young person recognize their potential? What if one internship could give a college student the confidence to pursue a career they once thought was out of reach? At Building Bridges, Inc. we believe meaningful opportunities can have an impact that extends far beyond the moment they happen. Since our founding in 2018, our mission has been rooted in exposing Black and Brown girls to STEM education, building confidence, and helping bridge gaps in access, representation, and opportunity. Today, our work is more inclusive of gender and various ethnic backgrounds, and our mission has transformed into more than science experiments and classroom activities. It's about the people participating in those experiences and the possibilities they begin to see for themselves.

Every experience is a seed planted. Every connection is an opportunity for growth. And every young person deserves the chance to thrive.

Planting Seeds of Curiosity Through STEM

For many students, their first meaningful introduction to STEM can shape how they view science, their abilities, and their future. That's why we prioritize hands-on, engaging, and culturally relevant learning experiences that encourage students to explore, experiment, ask questions, and think critically. Whether students are investigating the chemistry behind everyday products, exploring engineering concepts, learning about the human body, or discovering emerging technologies, our programs connect scientific principles to real-world experiences.

One example is our STEM Empowerment Summer Camp, which creates an immersive learning environment where girls can explore STEM through hands-on activities, mentorship, and real-world applications. During our camp, girls in grades 4th-8th engage in experiences that connect science with everyday life, including cosmetic chemistry, skincare science, product development, and entrepreneurship. Beyond conducting experiments, campers collaborate, solve problems, explore STEM careers, and build the confidence to communicate their ideas.

Similarly, our recent Sustainability and Composting Education Program introduces students to environmental science while encouraging them to consider their role in creating healthier, more sustainable communities.Through hands-on composting activities and sustainability education, students investigate food waste, resource conservation, and the environmental impact of everyday decisions. The program connects scientific concepts to practical actions students can apply in their schools, homes, and communities.

These initiatives reflect an important part of our approach: STEM education should be relevant, engaging, and connected to the world students experience every day. We want students to understand that STEM isn't something that only happens in a laboratory or belongs to a select group of people. STEM is all around them, and they have a place in it.

Nurturing Confidence Through Exposure and Encouragement

Exposure is important, but exposure alone isn't enough. Students also need encouragement, opportunities to succeed, space to make mistakes, and people who believe in their potential. At Building Bridges, Inc., confidence-building is intentionally woven into our STEM experiences. We encourage students to ask questions, embrace challenges, collaborate with their peers, and keep trying when something doesn't work the first time.

Our STEM Empowerment Summer Camp is one example of how we intentionally combine scientific learning with mentorship and personal development. Students are encouraged to express their creativity, collaborate with peers, and present their ideas with confidence. Likewise, our sustainability programming encourages students to recognize that their knowledge and actions can contribute to meaningful environmental change. We recognize that learning isn't always about getting the correct answer immediately. Sometimes, the greatest growth happens through problem-solving, adapting, and discovering what you're capable of accomplishing.

Confidence built in a STEM classroom can carry into school, relationships, leadership opportunities, and future careers.

Connecting Curiosity to Career Possibilities

Planting seeds of curiosity is only the beginning. We also want young people to understand how their interests, strengths, and experiences can connect to real-world career opportunities. That's why Building Bridges, Inc. developed “Building a Bridge to the Future You!”, an interactive, web-based career exploration game designed to help students discover career pathways that align with their interests. Featuring 120 careers across STEM, business, humanities, and skilled trades, the game encourages students to think beyond traditional career options and explore the many possibilities available to them.

Through an engaging, interactive experience, students can discover careers, learn about educational pathways and potential earnings, and begin connecting their interests to future opportunities. While designed primarily for middle and early high school students, the game also provides a valuable exploration tool for college students and adults considering their career interests and goals. By making career exploration accessible and engaging, we're helping them expand their understanding of what's possible and begin making connections between who they are today and who they might become tomorrow. Building futures starts with helping young people envision them.

Cultivating Leadership Through Mentorship and Workforce Development

While our STEM programs introduce younger students to new possibilities, Building Bridges, Inc. is equally committed to preparing college students and emerging professionals for the next stages of their journeys. Since 2023, BBInc has partnered with the University of Chicago's Career Advancement office to provide meaningful internship opportunities for college students. To date, 26 college interns and mentors have participated through this partnership and Building Bridges's direct recruitment efforts.

Our interns do far more than complete traditional internships or assist with administrative tasks. They gain paid, hands-on professional experience while contributing directly to our mission. Interns teach STEM programs, mentor middle and high school students at partner schools, support curriculum development, coordinate activities, and help implement programs that serve our communities. These experiences allow interns to apply what they're learning academically while developing the practical skills needed to succeed in professional environments.

We believe workforce development should extend beyond assigned responsibilities. That's why Building Bridges, Inc. intentionally invests in each intern's professional and personal growth through direct mentorship, STEM instructor and mentor training, team-building activities, and structured professional development opportunities. Our approach to workforce development is intentional: provide meaningful responsibilities, create opportunities to learn, offer guidance and constructive feedback, and empower young professionals to take ownership of their growth.

It Takes a Community to Help Seeds Grow

No seed grows without the right environment, resources, and care. The same is true for young people. Our impact is made possible through the collective efforts of educators, volunteers, mentors, corporate partners, community organizations, donors, and supporters who believe in creating opportunities for the next generation.

From our school partnerships, STEM Empowerment Summer Camp, and Sustainability and Composting Education Program to our career exploration initiatives and college internships, collaboration plays an essential role in bringing our mission to life. Each partner brings something valuable, whether that's scientific expertise, professional mentorship, access to resources, or simply the willingness to show up and encourage a student. Together, we're helping create an environment where young people can explore their interests, develop their abilities, and envision futures filled with possibilities.

Investing in young people is not just an investment in one program or one moment. It's an investment in the future of our communities.

The Seeds We Plant Today Shape Tomorrow

At Building Bridges, Inc., we understand that our impact cannot be measured solely by the number of STEM programs delivered, experiments completed, or students reached. It is also reflected in the student who begins to believe in herself, the intern who discovers their leadership potential, the young professional who gains clarity about their career path, and the relationships that continue long after a program ends.

Our mission begins with STEM exposure, but our impact extends far beyond the classroom. We are committed to creating spaces where curiosity is encouraged, confidence is nurtured, leadership is cultivated, and opportunities are accessible. Because when we invest in young people, we do more than prepare them for a particular career.

We help them recognize their potential to shape their own futures.

And that is what Building Bridges, Inc. is all about.
