Celebrating STEM Together: Why Family Engagement Matters
At Building Bridges, Inc., we believe that inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders extends beyond the classroom. Families should play an important role in nurturing students’ confidence and curiosity all while being invited to become part of the learning journey. That's why we intentionally concluded our STEM Empowerment Summer Camp with Family Engagement Day. This was a celebration that brought together campers, families, mentors, and staff to recognize each student's accomplishments.
Celebrating Student Success
Family Engagement Day began with an Awards Ceremony, where we celebrated each camper's achievements throughout the week and recognized the winning team from our Product Pitch Competition. It was a chance to reflect on everything the students accomplished, from developing new STEM skills and building confidence to working collaboratively and presenting innovative ideas. Celebrating these milestones alongside family members reinforces an important message: hard work, curiosity, and perseverance deserve to be recognized. For many students, sharing these accomplishments with the people who support them most makes the experience even more meaningful.
Campers Became the Teachers
One of the highlights of the day was watching campers step into the role of teacher. Earlier in the week, students explored the chemistry and biology behind personal care products by creating their own sugar scrubs, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and lip balms. During Family Engagement Day, campers guided their parents and loved ones through the sugar scrub activity, explaining the purpose of each ingredient and the science behind the product while helping them create one of their own. Watching students confidently teach what they had learned demonstrated just how much knowledge and confidence they had gained throughout the week.
Building Connections Beyond the Classroom
Family Engagement Day was also an opportunity for families to meet the summer camp staff and mentors who supported their children throughout the week. Together, families enjoyed hands-on activities, games, photo-op opportunities, refreshments, and meaningful conversations that strengthened the connection between home and camp. These moments help build trust, create community, and allow families to see firsthand the environment where their students were encouraged to explore, ask questions, and grow.
STEM Is Stronger When Families Are Involved
Research consistently shows that family engagement plays a critical role in student success. When families participate in educational experiences, students are more likely to remain engaged, develop confidence in their abilities, and continue exploring new interests outside of school. Our Family Engagement Day was more than a camp celebration. It was an extension of our mission to make STEM accessible, meaningful, and connected to everyday life. By inviting families into the experience, we reinforce that learning doesn't end when camp concludes. It continues through conversations at home, shared experiences, and the encouragement students receive from the people who believe in them.
